Nach “Back To Nature” (1977) und “Tearing Nights” (1978) war “Live And Alive” das dritte und letzte Album von Bastard, die zu der Zeit aus Uli Meißner (guitar), Keith Kossoff (guitar), Kalle Rothert (bass) und Drummer Toto bestanden. Ihre Vorliebe für Songs a la AC/DC hatte die Bands bereits auf den beiden Studioalben ausgelebt, aber erst auf “Live And Alive” zeigt sich die Suggestivkraft der Young-Riffs bei Songs wie »Danger Of Fire« oder »Are You Ready« in vollem Umfang.

Das mit Conny Planks mobilem Studio im Hamburger Sounds und im Ball Pompös, Kiel, mitgeschnittene Album erscheint 1980 beim Hannoverschen Indie-Label Lava Records. Trotz großartiger Resonanz ist danach Schluss. Meißner geht als erster, die anderen sind noch eine Weile live unterwegs, schließlich trennt sich die Band und Leadsänger Kalle Rothert gründet das Hardrock-Trio Rated X.

Immerhin drei Jahre sind Bastard ziemlich gut beschäftigt und haben nicht zuletzt in den Plattensammlungen der Harthörigen ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Zum Profitum reicht es zwar nicht ganz, aber sie werden öfter im Radio gespielt, treten im Vorprogramm von Judas Priest auf und supporteten 1978 sogar AC/DC bei einigen ihrer Deutschland-Gigs. Sie schlagen sich achtbar, Meißner räumt allerdings auch ein, dass sie gegen die geballte AC/DC-Power keine Schnitte bekamen. »Diese Kompromisslosigkeit, die Sache nach vorne zu spielen, hatten wir nicht. Die konnten wir auch nicht haben. 1977 wurden die ersten Aufnahmen gemacht und 1979 waren wir schon bei der dritten Scheibe, die Zeit war viel zu kurz.«

»Back To The Natur«, der Titelsong des Debüts, bringt es 1979 immerhin auf Platz 4 der Heavy-Metal-Charts im britischen Musikmagazin »Sounds«. Dass dieser eher lässig aus der Hüfte gespielte, den Spätsiebziger-Soundgewohnheiten gemäß etwas schmalbrüstig und indirekt produzierte Hardrock-Riffer in einem Metal-Kontext Erwähnung findet, zeigt, wie offen das Genre damals noch war.

Das eigentliche Heavy-Metal-Jahrzehnt haben Bastard dann kaum noch erlebt, obwohl es 1983 zu einer kurzzeitigen Wiederauflage der Band kommt. Ihr Musikverlag vermittelt ihnen Soundtrack-Aufnahmen für den Endzeit-Film “She – Eine verrückte Reise in die Zukunft” des israelischen Regisseurs Avi Nesher. Der Band brachte dieser Trash-Ausflug wenig ein. Danach war entgültig Finito!

For the first time on CD! The brilliant live album from 1980 by the German hard rock legend BASTARD!

After “Back To Nature” (1977) and “Tearing Nights” (1978), “Live And Alive” was the third and last album by Bastard, which at the time consisted of Uli Meißner (guitar), Keith Kossoff (guitar), Kalle Rothert (bass) and drummer Toto. The band had already lived out their preference for songs a la AC/DC on the two studio albums, but it was only on “Live And Alive” that the suggestive power of the Young riffs in songs like “Danger Of Fire” and “Are You Ready” became fully apparent.

The album, recorded by Conny Plank’s mobile studio in Hamburg’ club Sounds and in Kiel’ club Ball Pompös, was released in 1980 by the Hanover indie label Lava Records. Despite a great response, it was over after that. Meißner is the first to leave, the others continue to perform live for a while, and finally the band splits up and lead singer Kalle Rothert forms the hard rock trio Rated X.

Bastard are pretty busy for three years and have left their mark on the record collections of the hard of hearing. It's not quite enough to make a profit, but they are played on the radio more often, appear as the opening act for Judas Priest and even supported AC/DC at some of their German gigs in 1978. They do well, but Meißner admits that they were no match for the concentrated power of AC/DC. "We didn't have this uncompromising attitude to play things forward. We couldn't have it either. The first recordings were made in 1977 and by 1979 we were already on the third album, the time was far too short.«

»Back To The Nature«, the title song of the debut, made it to number 4 in the heavy metal charts in the British music magazine »Sounds« in 1979. The fact that this hard rock riff, played rather casually and indirectly in keeping with the sound habits of the late 70s, was mentioned in a metal context shows how open the genre still was at the time.

Bastard hardly lived to see the actual heavy metal decade, although the band did have a brief revival in 1983. Their music publisher arranged for them to record soundtracks for the end-time film “She – A Crazy Journey into the Future” by Israeli director Avi Nesher. This trash excursion brought the band little money. After that it was finally over!
